Birgunj: The landscape of rural markets in the Madhes region has been transformed by rapid development activities, particularly road expansion, in recent years. Once characterized by thatched huts, narrow roads, and small shops, these areas now boast wider roads, concrete buildings, and larger shops, leading to significant improvements in the local lifestyle. These development endeavors have injected enthusiasm among the local population.
Bariyarpatti market, adjacent to the Ladaniya market on the Indian border, is a prime example of such transformation. The market has witnessed increased foot traffic, while larger investment shops have opened up. "The scene has completely changed from narrow roads and modest huts to broad avenues and substantial establishments," noted Binod Yadav from Aaurahi in Dhanusha district.
Thori, now developing into a tourist destination, has experienced a boost in development and tourism due to the blacktopped Postal Highway. This highway has revitalized Thori, which previously suffered from a lack of road infrastructure and publicity. The blacktopping from Parsa district's Birgunj to Thori has facilitated easier transportation to Birgunj's district headquarters, shortening travel time and improving connectivity. Lalit Shrestha of Thori Rural Municipality-4 expressed, "The journey that once took around eight hours on a motorcycle now takes just one hour. The approximately 52 km of blacktopped road has eliminated dust and mud."
These developments have significantly benefited local residents. The transportation of vegetables, fruits, and other produce to the Birgunj market has become more efficient, potentially creating job opportunities. Shrawan Mahato from Bahudarmai Municipality commented on the positive impact.
The Postal Highway, often referred to as the lifeline of Madhes, has accelerated road construction across all eight districts of the province, improving accessibility to rural areas. This infrastructure development has led to prosperity in numerous localities within the province. Santosh Mehata, chairperson of Bariyarpatti Rural Municipality, highlighted the positive economic shifts brought about by the Highway.
Despite certain challenges such as land disputes and the COVID-19 pandemic, progress continues on various sections of the Postal Highway, driving the transformation of the Madhes region and fostering a sense of hope for the local population.
